MALI ZVORNIK

On the right bank of the swift and impetuous Drina River, bounded from the north with mountain Gucevo, and from the east mountains Boranja and Jagodnja, is located the municipality of Mali Zvornik. It's place, in which there are traces of human life from the Bronze Age, as evidenced by numerous archaeological remains. Is assumed that between theese two municipalities, with the same name, Zvornik and Mali Zvornik existed ancient Roman settlment Ad Drinum.

For this part of the Podrinje the empire and their leaders are always fighting: Austarijati, Scordisci, Drinjani, Romans, Nemanjići, Dubrovnik, Turks, Austrians, Hungarians, Karađorđević and the others, because it was important strategic area.

Mali Zvornik in the past was indispensable military fortification. On the hill Orlovine near Mali Zvornik, are the remains of the great medieval fortress that was probably built in the first half of the 15th century, during the Serbian country.

Back in the 1919th   King Alexander I Unifier, the great grandson of the Supreme Leader Karadjordjevic, vowed to bridge the "Drina noble one". Leader immortal vow fulfilled his great-grandson, and the bridge was officially opened on 12th January 1930th year.

In the immediate vicinity of the old iron bridge there is a hill, in whose womb is a combination of tunnels and prostorija.1931. The underground city was built, and it was   refuge for royal family.
Shelter was built between the wars, with access to the Roman town Ad Drinum, which connected both Drina coast.

There is a passage beneath of the Drina River, which has not yet been explored. Is not any digging under the trough, but the passages formed by the Drina long ago, centuries ago, cross-over the sunk of the Roman town.

Mali Zvornik is not unique for its rich cultural heritage and the remnants of historical time but also in modern industrial heritage such as the HE "Zvornik "- the first hydroelectric plant on the Drina.

After World War II, the new government in the second Yugoslavia launches five year plan for development. As the hydropower potential of the Drina since previously known, for the power plant construction site was chosen Mali Zvornik. In 1947th the decision of the then Yugoslav Government, the fundamentally has changed not only the appearance, lifestyle and demographic structure of the population of this settlement, but also the whole this area.

Construction of hydroelectric power began in 1948. , and the first year of construction, against the wild and unruly river, the workers have fought the pickax and shovel, and a great desire to win its rapids and whirlpools and direct them on the turbine. By quantity of the material used and its dimensions, hydroelectric on the Drina was a real architectural wonder.
How this place is depended of the river, for the formal creation of the municipality, they had to wait for the hydro plant be formally put into operation.

The solemn moment occurred on 26 September 1955. , then president FNRJ - Josip Broz Tito addressed the gathered people. According to the testimonies of surviving because of this event in Mali Zvornik gathered more than 30,000 people on both sides of the river and the city was decorated with slogans and banners with the image of the president, from the old King's Bridge to central discussion stage.
